One week to go! 50km route planned through the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains National Forest. Five 4kers on the agenda and one gnarly descent off of Mount Tripyramid. Fast packing/trail running with an overnight back country camping location picked out. Pictures when we are done!

Real talk: I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared. Big goals should be a little scary, I think. Marathon training is a freaking beast, physically and emotionally. After taking a season to focus on speed, I’ve been nervous to buckle down again. But I put on my lights and headed out into the dark drizzly morning to get it done. Keep showing up, every damn day.

This past weekend was supposed to my 5th Vermont100.

It would have been another scorcher this year. After successfully getting through last year's Vermont100 inferno, I have all the confidence I would have found the finish line again this year.

Over the years, I've learned to put my trust in my support team. Some days their work is easier than others. Last year, my crew worked harder than any crew I had before. With temps in the upper 90s, they did everything to balance cooling and steady forward progress. They were on a mission, and they saw to it that I crossed the finish once again.

Be comfortable putting your life in somebody else's hands. Trust that they may have better insight than you, and relinquish the control. Focus on your task at hand, to simply put one foot in front of the other.

Baselines performed without resistance. Added @rogue sleds and accurately measured change with @freelapglobal timing system to the hundredth of a second hands-free. The ideal resistance for acceleration development should result in a 8%-10% slowdown off of baseline.

Following this approach, we can identify the right resistance to improve athlete's power without compromising their sprint mechanics, ultimately improving acceleration. All too often athletes pull too much weight because anything less is 'too easy'. Sometimes, improvement doesn't always require strain.

Introduction to Trail Running Week 4.

Spent a few minutes talking about training differences between trail and road running. Specifically quad and ankle strength demands of trails. Additionally topics included focusing on run duration instead of mileage and how heart rate should be driver over pace when determining intensity.

Then we ventured off exploring the @lymelandtrust Hartman Preserve (White, Orange, and Red) for an hour (4.5 miles).

Next trail run will be Tuesday, at Mt Archer Preserve.

I spent the most time race day planning for Bigfoot200 than any other race of my life. Days of packing, weather checks, and 'What-If' scenerio planning helped me to be fully prepared for the terrain and elements. Heat, cold, rain, big ascents, technical terrain, river crossings, etc were not going to stop me. While I was unsuccessful (DNF), it wasn't as the result of poor planning.

Invest the time before your big race preparing for what may arise so that you don't need to problem solve in the race. You cannot over-prepare.

The Introduction to Trail Running program continued today at Becket Hill State Park Preserve in Lyme Connecticut.

A short little doozey that comes with a tough one-two combo in a short 4.4 miles. It hits you with long steady climbs (850 feet total gain) on fairly technical terrain. It will raise your hesrt rate, generate sweat on the brow, and burn those leg muscles.

With 13 runners and two hikers, this was the largest group since this program started last year. I am excited to see the growing interest in our local trails and trail running.

Meet Bertha, our @roguefitness 100lb Dog Sled, perfect for quad destruction drags, pulls, and pushes. Our athletes are often reminded how Bertha appears to gain weight in the middle of a set.

Bertha shares the training fields with the Betsy twins, a pair of 38lb @roguefitness S-25 Fat Boys. Either Betsy or Betsy are great for weighted sprint resistance or forward sled drags.

As we work to improve athlete sprint acceleration and leg strength, our sled family make regular visits to the workouts. Athletes see measurable progress over time as they increase the weight on the sleds.

It is a love - hate kind of thing. Some understand, yet to others, it's a mistery. Why go through such pain to move her?

Getting Bertha to move with all that weight translates into wobbly legs. Quads are burnt after. Who really won, the athlete or Bertha?

Exhaustion never felt so good.

We are at it again!

Our biggest squad yet. Full of local top performing high school and college athletes in cross-country, soccer, track, lacrosse, etc.
The first week is always filled with mixed emotions. Anxiety is high as we try to get organized. On the flip side, we are energized when seeing our athletes working hard together throughout the workout. Fitness gains are observable in only a few days.

This summer's Introduction to Trail Running series starts Tuesday (6/23). We will meet every Tuesday for 6 weeks (at least) to share the enjoyment of trail running. Our 6th consecutive summer of helping local high school and college athletes to achieve new fitness levels.

Two programs this year.

1) Strength, Speed, Agility, Balance program has been our core summer offering. We have new gear and a long list of exercises to utilize. June 18th Start.

2) Conditioning has been expanded to include high school athletes. Last summer was a trial program with several college soccer athletes. The program is a running conditioning program geared towards helping team sport athletes outlast their competition. It consists of a structured running program paired up with High Intensity Interval Training. June 15th Start.

Heat.

Not everybody's favorite weather to train in. It makes it more challenging and it comes with risks.

Most runs should be done at cooler times of the day. However, heat isn't to be avoided at all costs. Since we don't know what race day will present, it is important to prepare for a hot race with hot weather runs.

Heat acclimation will improve with as little as one day a week run at peak temps. It is also best to acclimate through the seasons. So as temps warm up through spring, get out there on a hot day each week. Don't wait till peak summer temperatures to start.

Today it was only 82 degrees here. Just the second day this spring in the 80s. Knowing we are weeks away from this being normal and peaks in the 90s, I chose today as my heat run.

It wasn't that bad.

At the time of his death, “Pre” held all 8 American track records from 2,000 meters to 10,000 meters. His transfixed fans would be on their feet, shouting “Go, Pre!!!” as he raced to new records. He was a ROCK star in the world of distance running!

We are still hoping to host a Summer Strength & Conditioning Program this year. As the state opens up, we will follow the guidelines they set. Our plan is to have multiple sessions a day from last June through late August to accommodate schedules and / or COVID19 gathering restrictions

**Dare to dream big** In 2012 I first learned of @utmbmontblanc after stumbling onto a @youtube video. @kilianjornet was floating along a hilltop, with Mount Blanc encompassing the background and some goats 100meters down the hill side from him. I immediately decided I wanted this on my bucket list.

My journey to UTMB took 6 years. As with anything to do with ultramarathons, patience and drive towards achieving the goal is critical to completing the task. It was well worth it! Surrounded by thousands of like minded ultra-runners and supporters for an entire week felt like a fantasy, but was real! The epic natural mountainous scenery was truly jaw dropping. With a lifetime of races under my belt, this race continues to be one of my most cherished running experiences. I dream of going back once more.

Find something that excites you. Commit to it. You will be rewarded for seeing it through.

Live life to its fullest.

There were three contenders (Bannister, Landy, and Santee) looking to be the first to break the four minute mile barrier when Bannister ran 3:59.4. Within 46 days, this record would be dropped even further by Landy.
